Rare earths, zirconium, hafnium and niobium rarely make the news. They are also the reason a fighter jet holds together at temperature, a nuclear reactor runs, a wind turbine turns and an electric car moves.

Rare earths are not rare. There is no shortage of these elements in the ground, and there never has been.

What is scarce is everything after the mine - separating seventeen chemically near-identical elements, then turning the result into metal, alloy and finished component. For thirty years the world let one country do all of it. In April 2025 China introduced export licensing across seven rare earths and the magnets made from them; exports fell 74% the following month.

Four of these minerals occur together, in the same rock.

Every one of these metals has a long journey from ore to finished component. Almost all of it happens in one country.
